That same night, the army of Media-Persia rerouted the Euphrates River, marched on the river bed and the city was taken by surprise without a fight. The Babylonian empire of gold fell to Darius, the king of Media-Persia, and the silver empire began. See Daniel 2.

In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain. And Darius the Median took the kingdom, being about sixty-two two years old (Daniel 5:30-31).

Soon, the cup of wrath will be full and Jesus Christ will take his people home. See Trumpets. God will judge the world for seven years and then the 1000 year reign begins. See Tribulation, Millennium. Because of God's mercy, whoever believes in God through Jesus Christ will be saved.

The great city [Mystery Babylon] was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath (Revelation 16:19).

After Nebuchadnezzar reigned over Babylon, his son Evil-Merodach and later son-in-law Nabonidus reigned. Belshazzar was the son of Nabonidus and ruled as regent. He hosted a great feast for thousands of his nobles. While enjoying the party, he called for the gold and silver goblets that King Nebuchadnezzar took from the Jewish temple. That night, they drank from the goblets and praised the gods of the Babylonians. But God had other plans to remove a king and his kingdom and set up a different king and kingdom.

Belshazzar, while he drank the wine, commanded to bring the golden and silver vessels which his father Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple which was in Jerusalem; that the king, and his princes, his wives, and his concubines, might drink therein. They drank wine, and praised the gods of gold, silver, brass, iron, wood, and stone (Daniel 5:2, 4).

Then fingers of a hand miraculously appeared and wrote on the wall. Belshazzar changed from well drunken to sober quickly as his party crashed. He called for the wise men to interpret the writing on the wall. The one who interprets the message would be promoted to third in the Babylonian kingdom. His wise men failed to read and interpret the writing. The king became even more troubled and the nobles were mystified.

In the same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the king's palace: and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. Then the king's countenance was changed, and his thoughts troubled him (Daniel 5:5-6).

The queen came to assist the king. There is a man in the kingdom that has the wisdom of the gods and can interpret dreams. Your grandfather, Nebuchadnezzar, made him leader of the wise men. Daniel was brought before Belshazzar. If he reads the writing and interprets the dream, he will be dressed in scarlet, given a gold chain and become the third highest in the kingdom.

There is a man in your kingdom, in whom is the spirit of the holy gods; and in the days of your father light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, was found in him; whom the king Nebuchadnezzar your father, the king, I say, your father, made master of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, and soothsayers (Daniel 5:11).

Daniel rejects the gifts and begins to interpret the writing starting with a short history. God gave Nebuchadnezzar a great empire. All the people of the land feared him knowing that he had power over who lived and who died. But the king was full of pride so he was made like a beast and ate grass like an ox until he acknowledged that God ruled the kingdoms and appointed rules. See Daniel 4.

O you king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honor: And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down (Daniel 5:18-19).

However Belshazzar knew the lesson of Nebuchadnezzar but did not humble himself. Instead he became full of pride, drank from the goblets of gold from the temple, praised the inferior gods of metal and wood but did not glorify God who made him king.

You his son, O Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you  knew all this; But has lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven; and they have brought the vessels of his house before you, and you, your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine in them; and you have praised the gods of silver, gold, brass, iron, wood, and stone, which see not, nor hear, nor know: and the God in whose hand your breath is, and whose are all your ways, you have not glorified (Daniel 5:22, 23).

The writing on the wall was "Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsini" in the Aramaic language (right to left). It literally meant, "Numbered, numbered, weighed, divided." Your days are numbered and your kingdom is finished, you are weighed in the balances and are judged guilty and your kingdom is divided and given to the Meads and Persians.

This is the writing, Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin. This is the interpretation of the thing: Mene; God hath numbered your kingdom, and finished it. Tekel; You are weighed in the balances, and are found wanting. Peres; Your kingdom is divided, and given to the Medes and Persians (Daniel 5:25-28).
